Three shifts have quietly rewritten the Malaysian search landscape over the past two years. Brands that noticed are taking traffic from brands that did not. Here is what our ranking data across sixty-plus accounts shows.
Shift one: rojak queries are now the norm, not the exception
Malaysians have always mixed languages in conversation. Now they do it in the search bar. Queries like “kedai repair phone near me murah” or “best moisturizer untuk kulit berminyak” blend Malay and English mid-phrase, and their volume has grown steadily every quarter we have tracked.
Search engines handle these mixed queries far better than they did even two years ago — which means they now resolve to real results pages with real competition. If your content strategy still treats English and Bahasa Malaysia as two separate keyword universes, you are invisible in the space between them, and that space is where a growing share of commercial intent lives.
What to do
- Mine your own site-search and Google Search Console data for mixed-language queries before touching any keyword tool; most tools underreport them badly.
- Write naturally bilingual FAQ and product content where mixing is authentic to how customers speak — forced code-switching reads as fake and converts accordingly.
- Check which language version of your page actually ranks for mixed queries, and consolidate signals instead of letting two pages cannibalise each other.
Shift two: the AI answer box eats the easy clicks
Generative summaries now sit on top of a large share of informational queries in Malaysia. For pure definition-style content — “what is SST”, “how does takaful work” — click-through to websites has fallen hard, and it is not coming back.
But the data has a second half that gets less attention: comparison, pricing and local-availability queries still send clicks, because the answer engines cannot take responsibility for them. “Best accounting software for Malaysian SME 2026” still produces visits. So does anything with genuine local specificity — delivery areas, halal certification, showroom locations, actual ringgit prices.
What to do
- Stop investing in generic definitional content; that traffic is gone regardless of your ranking.
- Double down on pages only you can write: your pricing, your comparisons, your local proof, your data.
- Structure content so machines can cite you — clear entities, tight answers, schema markup. Being the quoted source in an AI answer is the new position one.
Shift three: search happens inside social first for under-35s
For discovery-stage queries — restaurants, skincare, travel, courses — younger Malaysians increasingly start on TikTok or Instagram and only reach Google to verify or transact. The classic funnel has folded in on itself: social builds the shortlist, search closes it.
The practical consequence is that your Google results page is often the second impression. A prospect who discovered you through a creator video and then finds a thin, outdated website does not think “early-stage brand”. They think “scam”, and they are gone.
What to do
- Treat branded search results as a landing page: reviews, accurate business profile, fresh content, no dead links.
- Make sure claims made in social content are confirmed on the site within one click.
- Track branded search volume as a KPI for your social programme — it is one of the cleanest signals that awareness work is landing.
The through-line
None of these shifts reward tricks. They reward brands that know exactly who they serve, publish things only they could publish, and keep their whole presence — search, social, site — telling one consistent story. That has been the honest playbook all along; the algorithm changes just keep raising the price of ignoring it.
